Playa Balandra is located 13 miles north of town and has several small coves with calm water, good swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking. This is a popular beach and can become crowded on weekends.
Playa Caimancito is located 3 miles north of town on the sea side of the Concha hotel. The beach has calm water, lots of sand, and it is nice to be able to get something to eat or drink at the hotel.
Playa el Tecolote is 15 miles north of town and is a popular place with the locals. You will find restaurants, beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. Camping is permitted as the beach has restrooms, fire pits and trash cans (no RV hookups here).
Playa Pichiligue is 10 miles north of town. It is popular for sun bathing and has places to grab a bite to eat.
Cruises :* The most popular cruise is to Isla Espiritu Santo where people can visit the largest sea lion colony in Baja. See your hotel front desk or a local tour operator (price is around $70). Fishing :* La Paz is famous for sport fishing and you can rent anything from small panga boats (with guide and equipment) to large cruisers equipped with bathrooms. You will find that sport fishing here is far cheaper than in Los Cabos. Scuba :* La Paz is a tranquil seaside town on the Baja peninsula which is near some of the finest diving spots in the Sea of Cortez. Sea Kayaking :* With so many beaches and coves with calm waters, kayaking is a very popular sport in La Paz. Snorkeling :* Snorkeling locations are abundant here . . . though if you really like spending your days snorkeling, you will be better off buying your own equipment before coming here. Whale Watching :* December through March is the season and gray whales are the sight. Whale watching tours are most easily arranged through your hotel or local tour operator. Wear warm clothing (preferably water resistant) and bring a telephoto lens. Expect to pay around $120 USD for a 12 hour whale watching tour (you will need to travel 165 to 265 miles to see them). Price includes meals and guide. Diving: La Paz is famous around the world as a first class destination for professional diving. Here you can marvel over the extraordinary natural and artificial reefs. Enjoy observing the sea fauna, comprised of dolphins, sharks, whales and colorful fish, among other water species.
One of the most popular places for diving is the Suwanee Reef, ideal for beginners. Other interesting spots are the Islets: two gigantic and impressive rock formations in a mystical space that is home to a number of sea lions as well as many interesting natural reefs. Eighteen meters below, there is a sunken ferry from 1976 that also houses a wide variety of animals in the depths of the ocean.
Shopping in La Paz:
La Paz offers a wide variety of shops. Shopping places can be found in La Paz where you can buy regional handicrafts. In downtown, discover El Malecon with fishing and diving stores, famous designer boutiques, Mexican and European footwear, rustic Mexican or modern Italian furniture and lots of souvenirs. You will be very pleased with the quality and service in La Paz shops.
A must try for souvenirs is the Artesanias la Antigua California (Paseo Obregon 220).
Be sure to see the shops between 16 de Septiembre and Degollado. You will also find an authentic "China Town" in this area (established by Chinese laborers who were brought here many years ago).
La Paz Shopping Mall: *La Paz Shopping Mall is a favorite of locals and visitors. You will find department stores, places to eat and entertainment for all the family. Buy high quality clothing, shoes and cutting edge technology devices. It also features a movie theater with 15 screens and an excellent sound system.
